Cody Petersen lost 1-6, 1-6 to Peter Wright(Dubuque Wahlert)
Cody Petersen lost 2-6, 2-6 to Paul Leonard(Independence)
Cody started slow putting him behind early in both matches. Cody had his moments but just could not consistently make the shots. I am extremely proud of Cody and want to congratulate him on an outstanding year. Making the state tennis tournament is an honor and Cody should be proud of himself. He learned alot today about what he needs to do to improve his game to compete at the elite level. I have no doubt Cody will use today as a motivator for next year.

Ms. Claussen’s Retirement
The news of Ms. Claussen’s retirement has been out for a long time now. What are Ms. Claussen’s thoughts of ending her teaching career? Will she miss it? What will she do now that there aren’t anymore term papers to correct? Everyone who walks the halls of HCHS knows that Ms. Clausen is very busy at the end of the year and not many people get the chance to have even a minute with her but Ben (6th)and Nate (3rd) got the privilege to do an exclusive interview and reveal to the world the answers to these questions that have been gnawing at us for so long.

State Superpower
Unfortunately, the school year of 2007 will go down in history with a state championship. However, it has produced many outstanding teams, such as this year’s HCHS girls track team. After qualifying in 15 events for the state track meet, the Harlan girls were able to pull away with 51 points, placing 4th overall. In the video below Mary and Dana (6th hour) interview several members of the team, including seniors Regina Reinig and Janae Williams.

In the early 1900’s some families came to Omaha to catch up with the rest of their family that had come over previously from
Carlentini, Sicily. They then opened an amazing Italian restaurant. This business became
Omaha’s Little Italian section of town. In the back of the restaurant there is a beautiful gazebo and a fountain. When looking around in that garden you almost feel as if you are in
Italy. Unfortunately the business slowed down over the years, so the restaurant was to be demolished. After this news got around reservations came pouring in from people wanting to visit the restaurant one last time. This caused the management to postpone the demolition to the fall of 2007.

Rising Gas Prices a HUGE Concern
Is there $4/gallon gas in the future? It appears so as gas prices in Harlan soared to $3.39 a gallon, which is 20 cents up from the beginning of this week.
The rapid rise in gas prices is a huge concern for many people who drive cars. Instead of trying to fight a lost war in Iraq, we should try and make peace with the Arabic oil people who we get most, if not all our gas from. The many problems that rising gas prices cause include people getting gas and going without paying for their gas.
There are many solutions to solve this gas price crisis. Instead of driving all the time, you could drive less often or barely anytime at all. We would use less gas and the demand for gas would be lower, which could mean lower prices. Another solution would be instead of buying low mileage vehicles, buy high mileage vehicles, like compact cars, that don’t use as much gas in a trip. We should, instead of using the fossil fuels from the Arabic countries, start using corn based gas, or ethanol, on a regular basis or use our supplies up in Alaska.
Until then, we should start getting used to the rising gas prices because they will not go down anytime soon.

Golf Improvement!
Joey Buman of Harlan Community High School has in a way improved his golf game. At the beginning of the year 2007 Joey was averaging a 61 in nine holes. By the end of the school year he now is averaging in the mid to low fifties.
Joey plans to keep excerting forward and continue to improve. His goal is to average a 47. Those are some pretty high standards but he likes the challenge. This just goes to show that all you young golfer, if you are dedicated to a goal, anything can happen. So the best advice to you from Joey is dont give up.

WoW(WOrld Of Warcraft)
There are many things to start this off with. First is that it is a great game and there is many things you can do within the game. For Instace it has many things like you vs someone else anywhere in the world i.e Japan. Although the game is rated T for Teens it has childish themes. All in all the game has action, drama, and most of all interactive. The point of the game is to get to 70(only possible through “The Burning crusade” expansion). But the game has many things that we do today eat, sleep. This video is a tralier for the game http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/movies.html.

Pee Wees Baseball Begins!
Hi, this is Christine Wingert with HCHS News. I’m here today to tell you about pee wees baseball. Every summer kids are called to ask if they want to play baseball. Most say us because it’s fun in the sun. Cheezy?? Good. Anyways, I had the chance to interview Zachary Wingert about his experiences playing pee wees baseball for Westphalia. Zach says he enjoys baseball and that it’s his favorite sport. He makes a lot of friends and has a lot of friends that play with him.
Here is his interview :
Question : What position do you play and what do you like a about it?
Zach’s Answer: I play catcher. I really like it a lot because there is always a lot of action and it really keeps you into the game because you have to know everything that is going and pay close attention.
Question: Is baseball one of your favorite summer sports?
Zach’s Answer: Yes, because I won’t be lazy and so I can show my competitive side of me on the field.
Question: What are you reactions after loosing a game? Winning a game?
Zach’s Answer: Loosing, I’m upset and I wonder if the team and I are good players. Winning, I cheer and brag it to my siblings because I feel proud of myself knowing that I helped out the teams win.
Question: What are your favorite things about baseball?
Zach’s Answer: My top three favorite things are hitting the ball, scoring runs, and getting someone out.

Soccer Boys Fought Till The End
Even though we lost more games then we won, i still think out team was really good. We lost ten games and won four. I know that sounds pretty bad but i think we should do really good next year. There should be quite a few freshman next year that are going to go out for soccer and some of them are really good. I’ve played with them quite a bit and same with all the high schoolers.
We played Spencer yesterday morning at 10:00 o’clock in Stormlake. It was a really good game until there were 2 minutes left in the first half. Thats when they scored 2 goals and the score was, Spencer 3 and Harlan 1. On the specer team there was this one guy that had like 34 goals in the season. There school record was 32, which he beat it.
The word on the street says that Mr. Vis might be coaching us next year. I think that would be good for us cause he seems to know quite a bit about soccer and maybe we can win some more of our games.

Inside Westphalia Boars Practice
Today, I got to be one of the few people to see couple of times a year the practice of the Westphalia Boars Baseball team. The Westphalia Boars won American Legion last year for Cub A. That shows you what kind of tradition this baseball team has.It was a windy sunny day when I got an exclusive interview with the coach/player( you don’t see that very often) Daniel Schaben and Eric Crall. 6 months before the season starts. Elite baseball players come from around the world to try out for the team. They go through training for 3 weeks. The weak are seeded out and only the strong will survive. Somehow this year, kids were chosen around the county. The others had to pack their bags and fly back home.
During the practice, I got to see all the fundamentals that they go through. Even though they had two players today, the other players were off winning other awards. So far, they haven’t had any games because everyone has ran home crying after they have heard the Westphalia Boars crys and see their farmer tans.
Call coach Daniel S. to see when the next game is.

A New Kind of Wave
2008 Olympics look out; a new sport has hit the world! Concerts everywhere are inspiring athletes to “be passed overhead from person to person,” better known as crowd surfing. Generally, surfing crowds can only occur when the concert is jam packed with lots of hands ready to pass a body about without dropping the person, which could lead to serious injury. Not to be confused with regular surfing, crowd surfing requires no water, life jacket, or swimming suit. Some surf for entertainment, others for a conveniant way of travel. Many people agree that it can only be desribed as “life’s greatest pleasure,” but others fear that the dangers of crowd surfing outweigh the joy it brings. Discomforts such as being dropped, kicked, pinched, and tickled may occur. An interview with crowd-surfing legend, Megan H. follows.
Q: When was your most recent crowd surfing experience?
Megan: umm..on sunday..at the FallOUt Boy concert
Q: Were you nervous to try out the sport?
Megan: very nervous…but when everyone else did it i was like what the hey might as well…otherwise i knew i would have regretted it if i didnt…
Q: How do you begin a crowd surf?
Megan: well you just find a bunch of guys who are picking everyone up and you go up to them and tell them you want to do it and off you go…
Q: Do you surf far from your group of friends?
Megan: yeah….we were over on the edge and you had to go into the middle to find the guys who picked you up…then you just find em when you’re done…
Q:Have you experienced or witnessed any unfortunate mishaps while crowd surfing?
Megan: no i havent experienced any..but i have seen plently…there was this one girl who was crowd surfing and they just dropped her completely..flat out on the ground…it was crazy…also ronda c. got dropped once…she landed on a lady though she said…
Q: Do you have any tips for furture surfers?
Megan: it might look scary but its soo much fun…you’ll regret it if you dont do it….future tip…if your’re wearing sport shorts, make sure they are on tight…cuz they can easily come off….
Q: So if you got the chance, you would crowd surf again?
Megan: definately!!!!!!!…..

Graduation Not Too Far Away
This year the senior class has been involved in many fun things and has had some pretty fun adventures. They will soon be leaving our school. With only 2 days left the seniors are looking ahead to what the future may hold. As all of us younger high-schoolers know, the best part is going to the parties and eating the food. I have had the chance to interview Mitchel Petersen, a fellow HCHS Senior, about what he thought of his party and what he predicts for the future.
Q. Mitchel, what were you expecting of your party?
-I thought it would be fun and that there would be a lot of people.
Q. Did it turn out as you wanted?
-Yes.
Q. How does it feel to be graduating and why?
-Ummm…weird…because I will be on my own in a few months.
Q. Are you going to miss all of the people you are leaving?
-Yes.
Q. How do you feel about soon leaving your house and family?
-Scared.
Q. Are you nervous that you are going to be in college soon?
-Yes.
Q. What do you expect of college?
-I expect for classes to be hard but that it will be fun.

Freshman to State!
This year the Boys Cyclone Track team has had a pretty successful year. Friday, the district meet was held to advance to state. The boys and girls teams represented very well and advanced many. The big surprise was that while last year the boys team qualified four different freshman in four various events, this year the team only boasts one. That lone frosh was Michael Kaufmann, member of the 4×800 team. I had a chance to interview Michael about some of his thoughts on state track, and being the lone frosh.
Q: Michael, being the lone freshman for the HCHS boys team at state, are you intimidated by the blue track, the large number of fans, and all the animals you will be running against?
A: No, I’ve never been there and I really don’t know what to expect. I’m just going to run my race and try to block all of that out. Besides, it’s not that intimidating.
Q: What are your thoughts for the 4×8 team at state?
A: Well we qualify in 15th, so I’m hoping to break the top ten or maybe place (1st – 8th). I think we’ll be able to do it.
Q: What are your goals individually?
A: Well I’m looking to run a 2:05 half, and just give my teammates a chance.
Q: Do you think it’s odd that there is only one freshman going to state this year?
A: No, not really. It’s all about who you are behind on the team. I am lucky enough to run with some of the fastest guys in the state. When the older kids graduate, the younger kids will just fill in.
Q:And finally, do you think you will have to carry the bag of batons, and do all the scrub work, just like the freshman did last year?
A: Yes, probably. Jeff Hastert will make me.
So it looks like Michael has some pretty optimistic goals set for the 4×8 team this year at state. Hopefully he follows through as well as the other teams of boys and girls. Good luck at State this year and hopefully the freshman don’t fall in. This has been Jeff Hastert signing off for HCHS News!
